August 18, 2008:  After five years of closing and millions in renovations, Phelps Vocational High School has reopened here in Washington, DC.  Along with Mayor Adrian Fenty and other City officials, Soror Helen Newberry-McDowell, a former English teacher at Phelps, was present to greet former students and to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony.  The 105-year old centenarian says, "I hope that all of our boys and girls will find their way here and out of the streets and out of the jails."
